Chapter 5- News Releases

Posted on: September 29, 2010

Chapter five of  Public Relations Writing and Media Techniques introduced a couple of new concepts to me.

First of all I had no idea that the term for waiting to release a news release was “embargoing”. It makes sense that there is a term, but it just never occurred to me to look into what it was. The concept really makes sense though, because it allows PR professionals to give the media a heads up of what they want covered way in advance. It also gives the PR professional more control over the time line. I am curious if anyone has ever failed to comply with an embargo date…

I also found Tips for Success: 10 Classic News Release Mistakes to be very helpful. Most of the things listed would be very easy to otherwise overlook. The tip most helpful to me pertains to hyperbole. Until now I’ve always been wordy and used exaggerations in my writing. Both are things that just can’t be done in PR writing.
