TOW3- Why are comments such integral parts of blogs?

Posted on: September 11, 2010

By using a blog as a forum to display your thoughts and opinions you allow your audience to respond to your thoughts. In my opinion, the purpose of blogging is to receive feedback from your follower and to grow from this feedback. Whether people agree or disagree they are going to bring new ideas to the table and force you to expand your knowledge.

That being said, there is an etiquette to commenting on another person’s blog. You have to realize that although you aren’t face to face, you are basically having a conversation with that person. According to an article published on Grammer Girl, there are nine rules to posting a great comment. I’m going to touch on a few that I find the most important.

First and foremost you are to determine the reason behind your comment. This will directly shape the way in which you respond. Next it is important to remember to BE RESPECTFUL. Regardless of your intent, you do not want to come across as rude. Include a reason why you agree or disagree with the post. By substantiating your claim you make a more meaningful contribution to the conversation. Remember, length does not equate to meaning. Writing a novel of a comment is a waste of both your and the intended readers time. You’ve spent a ridiculous amount of time writing something that they are more than likely not going to read all of. Last but most definitely not least, PROOFREAD your comment before submitting it. You could have made a profound claim, but if you’ve misspelled something, no one is going to take you seriously.

Commenting on other people’s blogs can make or break you as a blogger. When done right, blogging can be a great thing.

I understand why leaving blog comments have such a major role in blogging for our class this semester. The whole point of blogging is sharing your opinion and then getting feedback from other people whether it is positive or negative. Blogging helps you become a better writer and leaving comments can also aid in that sense. I appreciate how you clearly stated that comments should be respectful. I know a lot of times people can say really nasty things if they disagree with you!
